Questions on Jail Sales Tax Sunset

Yavapai County Jail  Center Sales Tax is  Sunsetting in 2020

 

  1. What is the total take for 20 years, using $18M for 2018 and 2019
  2. What did the Camp Verde Cost to build and maintain assuming you purchased and built in 2000. 
  3. Can you produce the original language that appeared on the ballot in 1999?
  4. Why would we not use a property tax since many property owners who would pay the bulk of the tax have seasonal homes, less burden on the poor who live in the county?
  5. How often is the juvenile detention center at 100% at 75% or at 50%?
    1. According to County Supervisor Brown the JDetention Center is at 35% and the Camp Verde Jail per the Sheriff is over capacity perhaps by 50 bodies, most occupants in the jail are felons now.
  6. What does the state contribute to the $18Million dollar budget for the court system which I assume is part of the $18 Million dollar budget?
    1. According to the County Supervisor Brown the state does not contribute to the cost of operating the jail. Options could include charge back to perhaps 18 incorporated cities and villages for intake expenses.
  7. What is the need for this sales tax which potentially affects business in Yavapai County adversely. The real issue of sales tax is not the $4.00 coffee from Starbucks but the $50,000 truck or $100,000 RV or an evening out for a couple dining and attending a theater or movie?
  8. According to Fry’s the current food tax is 2.68% and a .25%  reduction would reduce the tax to 2.43% on food items.
